Just Say No To...Socialism?

I don't think the title is overly confusing. What’s one of the largest topics being discussed in the Democratic debates? The candidate who can give away the most. Many of us know this has another term: socialism. Ah, socialism! It sounds incredible! Giving money to those of us who need it. Students debts being paid. Not to mention, EVERYTHING IS FREE!!! Who wouldn’t want socialism??? I’ll tell you: those of us with common sense. Socialism is a dream. Never has a country with socialism be prosperous without the country becoming Communist or a dictatorship. Here is a list of countries that tried socialism, and failed (according to Forbes):
  • China
  • Cambodia
  • Cuba
  • East Germany
  • Ethiopia
  • North Korea
  • Poland
  • Romania
  • USSR
  • Venezuela (and everyone has seen the horrors of what is happening there)

These countries had socialist programs in their country, and now the place is complete crap. The elites run the country, while the citizens are treated like garbage. Venezuela was one of the richest countries in the world, and now they’re practically nothing. The country is falling apart. The citizens have to eat from the trash just to survive. Socialism has never worked, and guess what? It will never work. The idea of “free” comes at a cost. Any of you thinking, “But these Democratic candidates have different ideas for socialism. They won’t let what happened in these countries happen in the United States," I hate to break it to you, but you’re wrong. For this discussion, I’m going to discuss why socialism isn’t the answer, and why we cannot have it here in the US.

So let’s break down socialism. First, what is socialism? Socialism is defined as equally distributing goods. Usually, when it is discussed in the United States, they mean equally distributing wealth. Doesn’t sound too bad! Keep dreaming. Under these socialist ideologies, your paycheck would be distributed to everyone. Even though Sanders or Harris says, “They’re going to tax the rich,” it’s a lie. There’s only a small percentage of rich people, but an extremely considerable number of poor people. Guess who they will come for next? The middle class. That’s most of the American people. The other issue I have is that my money, my hard-earned money, would be also going to someone who IS poor, but doesn’t have a job and just sits at home collecting checks. So, I have to lose money for someone else to gain money, who isn’t helping redistribute the wealth? And even those who lost their job, and can’t find work for a few months. You think they’ll go back to work after receiving a check for a certain amount of money? I don’t think so.

Socialism would require complete trust in the government. I don't depend on my professors to give me a good grade, I have to work for it and depend on myself. It's the same principle. If you don't pay or do what the government says, they will not help you, even if you're on your death bed. Look at what happened in France, with that disabled man who died after being starved to death. 26 days without food or water. He never received help because the government decided he wasn't worth saving, so they let him die. Could you imagine what his family went through? It broke my heart to read it. France has universal healthcare, which is pretty much a form of free healthcare. The government pays for your bills. If your bills are constant, like this man's was, they can decide to stop paying, which means the doctors won't help you anymore, like in this case. Free comes at a cost. This poor man paid for it with his life, and that's awful. The government can decide who can "receive help" and who can't. Disabilities should not be a death sentence. No illness should be a death sentence. Having your own insurance, that you can pay for yourself and control, is much better than trusting the government to pay for everything. Nothing good lasts forever. That's how it is with socialism.

Now, I’m going to give a few stories that help demonstrate my point. The first is from this girl I met at YWLS. Her mother fled from El Salvador in 1989, from the civil war that broke out in the ‘70s. The government took over, and took the people’s guns. Her mother lost everyone except her twin sister. Socialism destroyed this woman’s life, but through hard work in the refugee camps, she managed to escape El Salvador and get her citizenship in America. That’s something else people who advocate for stricter gun laws don’t realize. Once we lose our guns, we lose our freedoms. Another story comes from Mikaela Bearpaw. Now, I’m not a fan of Bearpaw anymore because of her views on Israel, but her stories are worth mentioning. The Native American communities have socialism. These people barely have functioning electricity, food, and water. They have to depend on the government for everything, or they don’t get these simple luxuries. This is not the only place suffering with these conditions. We all know what is happening in North Korea, Hong Kong, or Venezuela. While Donald Trump is showing these dictators there’s a new sheriff in town (and he’s not taking any crap), I don’t think he should play “palsies” with these evil people. But that’s just my opinion.

Now, here’s a story I think mostly every person is familiar with. The story of Jim Jones. For those of you who don’t know, Jim Jones was the psychotic madman who took 900+ Americans to Guyana, from California, promising them this utopia. When his evil operations behind Jonestown were close to being exposed, he had his followers drink Kool-Aid laced with cyanide and other lethal drugs. Almost 1,000 Americans were killed in Jonestown, only 15 survived. This was the largest loss of American life PRIOR to 9/11. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid,” now you know where it came from. I’ve seen MANY documentaries on Jim Jones. The one entitled “Jim Jones: What Happened” is an excellent one to see about this madman. You hear the final audio recording in Jonestown, including the screams of the people who drank the poisonous concoction. This coward couldn’t take the poison, so he took the easygoing way out, and shot himself. Some speculated that the Jonestown massacre only took 20 minutes. He had the children go first, so the parents wouldn’t want to live because they killed their children. My family is from Guyana. They knew the effects of socialism. My grandmother (on my mother’s side) knew the medical examiner, and he stated that most of the victims did not drink the Kool-Aid. They had it forcefully injected into them.

Why did I mention Jonestown? Jim Jones was a socialist. He was a Communist. He was a Marxist. His wife said that Jones was already a Communist when she married him. These radical views are what ran the People’s Temple. The members of the People’s Temple HAD to give their checks to the church. They were forced to not have sexual relations of any kind. The sad thing is that the people listened. In the documentary on Reelz, one of the speakers made a good point: If you can control someone’s sex behavior, you can control anything. Anyone who went against these rules were met with terrible consequences, like being hung upside down or received beatings. One girl said she would draw a blank when Jones looked at her because she felt like he could read their minds. THIS is someone who lead almost 1,000 people to their deaths, and was a full blown socialist. While his people were crying in pain, Jones said, “Stop these hysterics. This is not the way for people who are socialists or communists to die. No way for us to die. We must die with some dignity.” Every Democrat running for President, AOC, they should all remember this phrase from Jim Jones: “Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.”Oh, the irony. If this doesn’t convince you that socialism is a bad idea, I don’t know what will. Socialism will only have the elites at the top, with all the money, while the people they claim to “fight for” are suffering.

To close, socialism isn’t the answer. Everyone who promises socialism makes it sound like a good thing. In all honesty, it isn’t. Capitalism is the answer. No matter the background, everyone has a chance of making a living and make money for themselves through capitalism. Socialism doesn’t provide that opportunity. I have provided stories explaining this, and you can research some! TPUSA did a great video of these men who escaped socialism in Venezuela, and why we cannot have it in the United States. But back to my original point, if we let a Democrat win 2020, kiss everything you love about this country goodbye. We will lose our freedoms. Socialism destroys countries. Corruption and greed take over and destroys these prosperous countries. That’s the reason socialism doesn’t work. Humans are naturally corrupted. There’s no going around it. Socialism destroys, and that’s why it cannot win in 2020. Free stuff is NEVER free for long. Someone will have to pay for it. The government shouldn't be involved in my life. As Donald Trump said, “The United States will never be a socialist country!”

Some of you may be annoyed with me saying the "Keep it friendly" thing over and over again, and that’s fine. I'm not calling anyone out. However, I think it’s important to remember that we don’t need to demean someone or use nasty language just because you don’t like what they said. That’s something Republicans and Democrats are both guilty of.

  1. My sister's a socialist, and in a perfect world, it sounds pretty great, but unfortunately, it never works in action. Good post.
